Backups Taking Advantage of Chances

fk-darcher120309As Falcons backup quarterback Chris Redman takes the reins of the offense in a pivotal game Sunday against the Eagles, he joins a list of some former Falcons who have stepped in his shoes in the past and been successful.

Let’s take a look at a few.

Dave Archer (1984-85): The hard throwing, signal-caller out of Iowa State replaced Steve Bartkowski in Week 6 of the 1985 season and went on to lead the Falcons to their only four wins of the year.  He completed 58 of 105 attempts for 821 yards and did not throw a pick in the final two games.  Also, in 1984 “Arch” ironically guided the Birds to a 26-10 victory over Sunday’s opponent, the Eagles, replacing Mike Moroski.  He completed 11 of 18 passes for 181 yards with one touchdown to help Atlanta snap a nine-game losing streak with a win over Philadelphia.

Wade Wilson (1992): Filling in for Billy Joe Tolliver, Wilson took over for the final three games of the ’92 campaign. His biggest outing was a team-record five touchdowns passes at Tampa Bay in Week 15 to claim a 35-7 victory.  His touchdowns were thrown to Michael Haynes (2),  Andre RisonMike Pritchard and none other than cornerback Deion Sanders, who lined up in the slot that day.

Bobby Hebert (1994): The “Cajun Cannon” was in and out of the lineup as a starter and backup throughout his four-year Falcons career. In 1994 in a relief role he came off the bench in the second quarter for Jeff George to preserve the Falcons lead in an eventual 10-9 victory over the Cardinals in Week 17.  A week earlier, Hebert almost pulled off a win against Green Bay coming off the bench again, completing 20 of 41 attempts for 221 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown for a late lead.  He was credited for a win in a Week 5 contest at the Rams again in relief of George, tossing the game winning pass to wide receiver Ricky Sanders with 3:14 remaining.  He calmly completed a two-point conversion to Terance Mathis for the 8-5 victory.

How do you think Redman will fare this week replacing Matt Ryan?

    i believe in chris redman 100%. he’s a great quarterback who in 2007 was thrown into a starting role and made the best out of it and he did the same last week and i think a full week with the starters will give him even more confidence and he’ll lead us to victory. as far as stats go i think he’ll complete 24 of 34 attempts for 257 yards 2 TD’s 1 INT

    Chris has already proven how valuable he is not only in the last game but prior to Matt coming in, I don’t think their is a team in the NFL with a better #2 QB than Redman.

    John Parker Wilson,

    You just blew a rookie season. Why are you wasting your life away in Never-Never land?
    I wish your folks would come to Atlanta and knock some sense in your head. There are a lot of teams out there that could use your talent.

    @Eric
    Mr. Wilson is very lucky to be where he is this season.

    Redman is a solid backup as long as he sticks to the basics the Falcons have a fighting chance.
